NIU Cares Day Oakwood Cemetery Cleanup

DeKalb Township’s historic Oakwood Cemetery was selected as a site for 2018’s NIU Cares Day.  Approximately 25 members of Phi Kappa Psi worked with the DeKalb Township Road District crew to clear over 6 acres of debris that would make it hard for landscaping and maintenance to begin on schedule.

“I’m really impressed with how hard the guys worked, and think they did an excellent job,” said Highway Commissioner Craig Smith.

Supervisor Jennifer Jeep Johnson was onsite during the cleanup as well, and echoed Commissioner Smith’s sentiments, adding, “they were so fast, it was hard to keep up with them! They were such a nice group!”  Johnson chronicled some of the clean-up on DeKalb Township’s Facebook page, which you can view here.

Oakwood Cemetery is one of DeKalb’s oldest, dating back to the 1800s.  DeKalb Township initiated a multi-year restoration project for both Oakwood and Evergreen Cemeteries in 2012.   For more information on the Cemeteries, click here.
