Voluntary Action Center’s mission statement is “Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb County is committed to providing high quality services that address the basic transportation and nutrition needs of its community.”
TransVAC: Transportation for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and the general public to and from community facilities and resources for purposes of acquiring/receiving services, to participate in activities, or attend events in order to reduce isolation and promote successful independent living. The service is provided by 25 paid drivers with VAC’s fleet of 40 accessible buses and mini-vans. Arrangements for rides are made in advance by calling the Transportation Call Center. Service is available to the general public on Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m..
MedVAC: Transportation for older adults, persons with disabilities and the general public to and from out of town medical appointments with the purpose of providing access to needed medical care. The service is provided by 20 volunteer drivers and several paid drivers who use VAC automobiles and mini-vans to provide the service. Arrangements for rides are made in advance by calling the Transportation Call Center. Service is available for all county residents, seven days per week.
Meals on Wheels: Provision of meals to older adults and others in need who are homebound because of illness, physical or mental impairment, or who are otherwise isolated. Service is provided with the help of 1,200 volunteers who deliver the meals and make personal contact with each recipient to ensure their safety and well being.
Noon time meals are available Monday through Saturday with frozen dinners also available for those in need.
Senior Luncheons: Provision of nutritious meals in centrally located and accessible congregate meal sites for the purpose of promoting better health and reducing isolation. VAC operates two sites in DeKalb and one site in Sycamore.
