Barb City Manor Retirement Home represents a special concept in affordable retirement living. It is an independent living facility. It is designed to accommodate singles or couples 62 years of age or older who desire to lead an active and social lifestyle without the responsibility associated with home ownership.

Barb City Manor is located in the historic former DeKalb Public Hospital building on the city’s south side.  Senior residents have occupied this very affordable retirement home since February 1979 when Barb City Manor became a leader in retirement living alternatives. Barb City Manor offers a wonderful alternative to living alone in a home or apartment that presents maintenance and upkeep burdens to seniors.

Amenities at Barb City Manor include 3 delicious meals daily with many menu choices, a large variety of social activities and weekly religious services. 24 hour security, weekly housekeeping and linen service, maintenance and all utilities are included in the affordable monthly fee.  Barb City Manor does not provide assistance with personal care and medications, but can provide those interested in those services with a list of providers.  A Beauty/Barber Shop, Gift Shop and ReSale Shop are on the premises for resident’s convenience.  Residents can also enjoy the beautiful grounds with plenty of outside seating around the building and on two decks.

Residents of Barb City Manor have a choice of studio or one-bedroom apartments and a variety of floor plans and prices.  Besides the apartments private space, there are lounges, sunrooms and dining/activity rooms that the residents may use for visiting and entertaining.  Residents enjoy socializing over a game of cards or an evening movie on the big screen television.  Besides BCM’s scheduled activities that include Bingo, puzzle hour, craft circle, Wii games and movies, FRIENDS of Barb City Manor, the auxiliary, holds monthly birthday parties and holiday celebrations.  There are scheduled exercise classes as well as an exercise area with a variety of equipment for health benefits.
